Corona Virus – was quiet unknown to the people and it would be a rarest of rare chance that any company or organization across the globe would have accounted for recent Corona Virus outbreak (2019-nCoV or COVID-19) in their risk register. This puts a question mark on how risk professionals identify the risk. But that doesn’t mean, they are inefficient. Risk Professionals like all other professionals, are also humans and humans nor the machines neither ever, despite of all the technologies around, will be able to 100% accurately identify and predict all the risks. It’s something which is not possible. Hence, there is always an inherent risk built in the risk management process, which becomes critical, particularly in situation when such unidentified risk materializes in a big way, like the one which we are facing today.
But has humans succumbed to such huge effect of uncertainty on their objectives – an objective to live. The answer is clear and loud – NO.
So, what is so different among humans – that they act as cause and as well as remedy to catastrophe, which is very unlike other living species on the earth. The answer seems to be quite simple – Positivity and Resilience of Humans.
Positivity – Inspiring others, not based on their goals or outcomes, but by their exhibited behavior, life outlook, attitude in any given situation and leading by example. Even the calmest workplaces can get stressful at times – it’s more important how leaders react to this stress with a positive outlook rather than get flustered and place blame.
Resilience – Grit of a leader to not only perform during good times, but also roll up their sleeves and produce when times get difficult. Focus on solutions rather than on problems.
These qualities are providing them the leading edge over the uncertainty and neutralizes the effect of it. It is these qualities which is acting as torchbearer in this darkness moment and currently paving the way for the humans towards the sunshine.
Taking a clue from the current situation of uncertainty and the way the mitigation actions are being carried out, it is quite evident that “Positivity and Resilience” qualities is quite essentials for a Leader of the Organization or Company or State to mitigate the effect of unforeseen and unidentified risk. Such qualities of a leader have the capability to thwart any threat or risk to the organization. Such qualities act as compensating controls to thwart any uncertainty arising from the unidentified risk.
So, all the risk professionals must ensure that such leadership qualities are not given a miss within the organization top executive cadre to ensure that the inherent risk of human is being mitigated by human traits of Positivity and Resilience.
